This painting was created for a wonderful lady who adopted a wild American mustang from the high desert of Oregon. This magnificent creature affectionately named "Clover" is a true piece of American history. It was a privileged to have been asked to paint her portrait. Before ever lifting a brush on a commissioned work, I need to have a clear idea of what my client would like to see in the final piece. The success of this painting was due in large part to her the fantastic communication. She provided excellent photos of her horse, from different angles and different lighting conditions. She also did an excellent job at describing all the elements she liked about each photo provided, and also the traits of her horse that she wanted to have in the painting as well. We discussed the background element, and she was so kind and trusting as to give me artistic freedom in this area. Initially I was uncertain how to approach the background, but after researching the American Mustangs, it became apparent that the background had to be a scene from the mustang's environment in order to truly capture the spirit of this horse. In my research I learned much about this horse's history, the terrain they thrive in, statistics about them, and the adoption process. Before this project, my only knowledge about the American mustangs was from the movie "Spirit - Stallion of the Cimarron" and the Breyer model horse American Mustang Series. Below are some links where you too can learn more about this piece of American heritage, and hopefully appreciate them like I have. They are truly beautiful animals, and extremely graceful, but in a rugged wild way. I have been inspired by seeing all the photos, and it is my desire to create more paintings of the wild mustangs.
